SAN FRANCISCO — What's going to happen if Facebook and some of its apps— like Instagram and WhatsApp — go down at about the same time? And then stay out for hours intermittently? People around the world found out on Wednesday when interruptions were experienced throughout the day by all three services.

The issues started around 11 a.m. According to DownDetector, an analytics service that calls itself an internet weather report, Eastern Time and affected users in countries including the United States, Japan, Australia and Mexico.

Profiles declined to load on Instagram. Some Facebook users logged in to empty news feeds, while others were able to see updates from their friends but couldn't like them. And users of WhatsApp found it difficult to send and receive messages.

At 9 p.m. Eastern Time, Facebook services ' troubles have not been resolved. Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive of Facebook, recently announced a push to bring all of its apps closer together, uniting direct messages across various services. The service interruptions highlighted a consolidated social media giant's potential risks as users floated from one lonely social feed to the next, searching for updates fruitlessly.

Even the bug reporting platform of Facebook itself— in which it reveals what services are down — was offline. So the company used to announce updates on one of the only major social media platforms that it does not own, Twitter.

The company added that a cyberattack did not result in the issues. Instagram said it knew the experience was "frustrating" separately.

Since Facebook and its apps have so many users around the world — around 2.7 billion — the venting has been heightened, understandably. Some people expressed grief over the unavailability of the apps.
